1. Introduction

Welcome to SkySnap ("we", "our", "us"). SkySnap is a mobile application that helps users discover and identify planets in the night sky using device sensors and GPS data. Your privacy is important to us, and this Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information.

2. Information We Collect

We collect the following types of information:

  • Device Sensor Data: Accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer (compass) data is processed locally on your device to determine your viewing direction. This data is never transmitted to our servers.
  • GPS Location: Your approximate location is used to calculate the positions of celestial bodies in your sky. Location data is processed locally and is only stored if you choose to save your discoveries.
  • Account Information: If you create an account, we store your email address and encrypted password through Firebase Authentication.
  • Discovery Data: When you detect a planet, we store the planet name, detection time, and approximate location (if permitted) to maintain your discovery history.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use the collected information for the following purposes:

  • To provide the core sky-scanning functionality of the app
  • To maintain your planet discovery history and streak progress
  • To sync your data across devices when signed in
  • To improve the accuracy of our planet detection algorithms
  • To provide customer support

Important

SkySnap can be used without creating an account. When used without an account, all data is stored locally on your device and is never transmitted to our servers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does SkySnap need location access?

SkySnap uses your GPS location to calculate the exact positions of planets in your sky. Without location data, we cannot determine which planets are visible from your location.

Why does SkySnap need motion & orientation access?

We use your device's accelerometer, gyroscope, and compass to determine which direction your phone is pointing. This allows us to match your viewing angle with the calculated positions of planets.

Can I use SkySnap without an account?

Yes! SkySnap works fully without an account. Your discoveries will be saved locally on your device. Creating an account allows you to sync data across devices and maintain persistent streaks.

How do I delete my account?

You can delete your account from the Profile > Settings screen in the app. This will permanently remove all your data from our servers. Alternatively, contact us at app.skysnap@gmail.com.

The planet detection seems inaccurate. What can I do?

Try calibrating your compass by moving your phone in a figure-8 pattern. Make sure you're away from strong magnetic fields (speakers, magnets, metal structures). Also ensure you have a clear view of the sky — planets below 5° from the horizon are filtered out.

Why can't I see the Moon in my challenges?

The Moon is not a planet, so it doesn't appear in challenges, logs, or profile statistics. However, you can still see and detect it in the Explore view as a calibration reference.
